      Celebrating Ed’s Incredible Milestone

On Tuesday 29th April, Deputy Manager Lindsey Waters and Keyworker Emma Taylor-Walker were honoured to accompany Ed to Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Headquarters in Washington. Ed was being recognised for an incredible 21 years of service with their Technical Department (despite the event marking his 20th year!).
Ed’s workshop manager, Debbie Robson, praised his dedication, kindness, and strong rapport with his colleagues. Ed was proudly piped into the ceremony by the brigade’s piper and received his award from the local councillor. He also enjoyed a photo with Chief Fire Officer Peter Heath KFSM.
Lindsey shared: “Having supported Ed for 8 years, I’ve never felt prouder than watching him receive this recognition. The kind words spoken about him reflected just how hardworking and valued he is – a real credit to Ashdown Care.”

      Mano’s First Holiday

Mano recently enjoyed his first ever holiday, staying two nights at Hollie’s Retreat in Felmoor Park, Morpeth. Highlights included meals at The Crazy Horse pub, night-time entertainment, relaxing in the hot tub, exploring the lake, and a visit to the zoo.
A huge thank you to Patrick for making this a fun-filled and memorable trip – Mano is already planning a longer break later in the year!

      Amble Adventures with the Gang

Ron, Ed, Craig, and Ralph enjoyed a day out in Amble with staff Ellen and Emma. The boat trip was a highlight, especially for Ron who was thrilled to see his favourite animal – seals! Puffins also made an appearance, and laughter followed when Ellen turned a bit green at sea!
The day ended with a picnic in the park and well-earned ice creams all round

      Brandon’s Day Out

Brandon had a great time on the Metro to South Shields for a day at the swimming baths. He particularly enjoyed the slides and a relaxing soak in the jacuzzi.

Chris and Kirsty Enjoy a Night Out

Chris recently had a brilliant night at The Customs House enjoying a Spice Girls tribute act. The evening began with pizza and a pint at a local restaurant – a perfect night out!
Kirsty also danced the night away at the same show, enjoying every minute alongside her support staff.

      Paige’s Day Out

Paige had a brilliant time at the Alan Shearer Centre – exploring the grounds and sensory rooms with a big smile all day!

      Weekend Getaway to Berwick

Kim (Ravenscroft) and Deborah (South Hill) had a fantastic weekend break at Berwick Haven Holiday Park with staff Margaret and Lindsey. From bingo and arcades to exploring Berwick town and enjoying evening entertainment, both had the best time – full of fun, food, and great company.

A Day at the Palomino Trust

Ron and Ed recently visited The Palomino Trust in Rowlands Gill with Emma. The morning was filled with archery, and the afternoon was all about caring for the horses – brushing, walking, and even painting their hooves!
Ron stole the show with his story of sneaking a horse into his bedroom as a boy – his lifelong love for horses was clear to everyone there.

Celebrating Love – Margaret & Richard

A huge congratulations to Margaret Stobbart and her husband Richard, who are celebrating 45 years of marriage this year. The couple will be renewing their vows on 14th June 2025 – a wonderful milestone!

      Updates

This month brings significant updates across adult learning disability services and children’s residential care. Staying informed ensures we continue delivering exceptional, compliant care. Below is a summary of the latest developments and a SMART action plan to guide our response.

🧠 Adult Social Care & Learning Disabilities
      1. CQC Emphasizes ‘Right Support, Right Care, Right Culture’
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has reiterated the importance of the ‘Right Support, Right Care, Right Culture’ framework for services supporting autistic individuals and those with learning disabilities. Providers are expected to demonstrate person-centred care that promotes dignity, privacy, and human rights. Care Quality Commission+2Care Quality Commission+2Care Quality Commission+2
      2. Ongoing Concerns Over Inpatient Care
Despite targets to reduce inpatient care for individuals with learning disabilities and autism, recent data indicates that the NHS has not met these goals. The CQC highlights the need for more suitable community resources to prevent inappropriate hospital admissions. Care Quality CommissionCare Quality Commission
      3. Immigration Rule Changes Impact Recruitment
New UK immigration rules require care providers to prioritize recruiting from the existing pool of skilled workers within the UK before seeking overseas candidates. This change aims to support displaced migrant workers already in the UK but may pose challenges for staffing. Skills for Care+3HCR Law+3HCR Law+3
      4. National Insurance Contribution Increases
From April 2025, the employer rate for National Insurance contributions has risen to 15%, with the salary threshold dropping to £5,000. This change is estimated to add £940 million in costs for independent care providers. The Children’s Partnership+2HCR Law+2HCR Law+2

      🧒 Children’s Residential Care & Ofsted Updates
      1. Proposed Reforms to EHCPs
The government is considering reforms to Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs), potentially limiting them to children with the most complex needs. Critics warn that this could leave many children without crucial support, leading to increased school absences and poorer educational outcomes. Afterschool Alliance+16The Times+16The Times+16The Times
      2. Ofsted’s Inspection of Supported Accommodation
Since September 2024, Ofsted has been inspecting registered services providing supported accommodation for looked-after children and care leavers aged 16 or 17. These inspections aim to ensure services are helping young people and keeping them safe. socialcareinspection.blog.gov.uk
      3. Funding Cuts Affect Adoption Support
Charities report that funding cuts to the Adoption and Special Guardianship Support Fund have had a devastating effect on adopted children, potentially leading to more adoption failures. The per-child funding was reduced by 40% in April, raising concerns about the long-term well-being of adopted children. The Guardian

      Thought of the Month

Thought of the Month: “You can’t pour from an empty cup.”

We’re in a profession that demands a lot from the heart—caring, supporting, lifting others up day after day. But in the middle of giving so much to others, we often forget something really important… ourselves.

Self-care isn’t selfish—it’s essential. Just like we wouldn’t let the people we support run on empty, we need to make sure we’re not doing the same. That might mean taking a proper break, having a chat with a colleague, or just stepping back for a moment to breathe.

This speaks directly to our CARE values:

      • C – Commitment to team means checking in with yourself as much as others.
      • A – Always work as a team reminds us that we can lean on each other when we need to recharge.
      • R – Respect and dignity isn’t just for the people we care for—it’s for you too.
      • E – Education and reflection helps us learn when it’s time to pause, reflect, and reset.

So this month, take five minutes for you. Protect your cup. Refill it. You’ll be better for it—and so will the people around you.
